I was with Dell previously and I would say that Inspiron 9400 is a good machine. The only thing that can be pointed out in the machine is the Screen and Keyboard layout (Has some issues).
If used very carefully is one of the best ones in the Insiron's product line.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 that still works perfectly after 4 years. I've only had one warranty issue where the CDRW combo drive had to be replaced.
I would not purchase this particular model again because of the weight...I got tired of carrying 7+ pounds when taking it places. If I were buying a laptop again, I would purchase the lightest model I could find and buy peripherals.

I use a dell inspiron e1705 and it is great, very light weight, probably about 4lbs. Yours seems a bit out dated
