The paintings of the Caves of Lascaux are paintings of animals. Nobody can say why they did it. In history and archeology we can speak with assumptions, maybe it was part of a ritual or something else.
One amazing thing about those paints, is that the artist did not use a line around the images he draw. As far as we know that was the first time, the second time was in a paint found in a tomb in ancient Macedonia in Greece.
It took a couple of millenniums for the painters to overcome "the fear of the line".

Like movies are today. They drew pictures to illustrate their stories of the hunts. Everybody sat there in a circle, listening, digging the visual aid.

Prehistoris hunters would paint sucessful hunts in the hope the magic would make their next hunt sucessfull.

Those pictures were prayer´s. They were painting with their hands using earth, blood, ... Animals were stabbed with spears, arrows etc. Drawings were rituals before hunt!
