At a gun shop they are required by federal law to conduct a background check on you before they can sell you a firearm... plus there is a waiting period before you can take ownership of said firearm (in some states). However if you buy the gun from a private individual, at a gun show for example, there is no required background check or waiting period. You can be blasting away in a matter of minutes if that's what you're into. Ain't America great... we have loopholes for everything.

There are several ways in which one can APPLY FOR a gun owners license---it can be done at an agency of the government--at a gun dealership--and at times the applications are offered for people at gun shows---the application HAS TO GO THRU THE FEDERAL AND STATE RECORDS CHECK---this is where all of an individuals background--criminal history ( if any ) --everything has to clear the check out---Then if and when the licenses application is approved--with that approval the gun shop can then---sell you a gun---but before you take pocession of it--most states require you to read and sign a form that clarifies all the applicable laws reguarding gun ownership where you can not say later that you were not informed as to the letter of the law concerning the ownership of the gun that you purchased

Each state has different laws that a person has to fulfill before they can purchase a gun. Usually you have to fill out forms and produce proof of being a "sound mind" and a birth certificate, and lots of other certificates before you get a "GUN PERMIT." Then you can go out and LEGALLY purchase a gun in a gun shop and fill out more forms when you do. It must be registered with the law, if you carry a gun. But many guns are purchased illegally without going thru all this format... that if they are caught with an illegal gun, it is a felony and they are in trouble with the law that will require time in the penitentiary.

You go in and pick out the gun (pistol or rifle). Fill out a form and the clerk enters the info into a computer. The info is transmitted through the internet and they do a background check. This can take from 30 minutes to 3 hours. If there is a problem they have up to 5 days to get back to the gunstore with the final decision. If there is no problem then you get to take the gun home with you that day.

Now this is in Colorado. It can be very different in other states like California.

I'm an American, Caribbean American. America covers two Continents (and the bit in the middle with all the islands). Having lived in the USofA, I can honestly say, that it depends on which State, City, County, Township or District you are in. Depending on the type of gun you are buying, some places, there are no background checks, others have them. Most, if not all, require proof of age. Some limit handguns, some limit all. I think I remember reading recently, that automatic weapons are covered by Federal law, so those do have background checks.

Just make sure you go to the right place.

There are no regulations for buying from a private individual.

Restrictions are if you are a former felon you can not own a gun.

Most of the wait periods pretain to hand guns. You can actually buy shotguns, deer rifles with the ammo and walk right out the store in the Southern states.

Walmart will sell you a gun but not the ammo in the same purchase.

If the ammo will shoot in a handgun you have to show ID.

Each state is different. In some states you can get the gun, bullets, and permit within an hour; other states it can take up to 25 days. OF COURSE, this is AMERICA, where if you are willing to pay about triple the amount, you can go to a gun show or some pawn shops and get it right then.....(its illegal but money talks here in the states...)

Yes, you can walk into a shop, usually one devoted to hunting and guns, and buy a gun and ammo. You do need to get a permit and there is usually a waiting period of a few days between placing the order and picking up the firearm. Regulations on gun purchase and ownership and use (e.g. right to carry a concealed weapon, how to carry the gun when traveling in an automobile, and other details) do vary from state to state and city to city, but in general we do have the right to keep and bear arms, for self defense and for hunting and sport shooting (clay pigeons and other target shooting). If you are a convicted felon you cannot legally purchase a firearm.

if you have a clean criminal record you can go and buy a rifle at any store that sells them.. The store will call and have you checked out to ensure you are clear to own one.. But hand guns require a permit to own.. which you have to get ahead of time, usually from a court house or sheriff department. Applying for a hand gun permit can take a few days to clear..After getting the permit then you can go to a store and buy one.
