First I would like to say illiterate means unable to read LOL. Now to get started. Do you know most Americans, or are you talking about a handful or so that you have discussed this with? We are a rather large and populated country. Your statement is ignorant based on your "most Americans" theory and to be quite honest with you, most people such as the ones you are talking about probably don't give a damn. I for one am aware that Persia and Iran are the same, and that means nothing to me, I could careless as to what you are, as long as you're a decent person. I personally love your carpets though.

Do you find it's just the American people? Are Europeans any better really?
Why don't you just say Iran? It may be more clear to the listener what you mean and you would then be a more effective speaker.
Or give an example; Persia, like the rug or like in Aladdin.
Iran; like the Shaw of, or hostages
Once your listener has a reference, I'm sure they will not be as confused as to your origin.

It could be asked why most (or at least ONE) person(s) interested in Persia get their subjects confused. Literacy is the ability to read...the issues you have are with World History and Geography. And anyone who's not going on Jeopardy! really doesn't care that Iran was once called Persia many years ago...especially in a hemisphere where country names change constantly.

I hate it 2 when Persians/Iranians are considered Arab .... b-cause, Arab countries (ex: Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Eygpt, Syria )are all of ARAB race but Persians r of the Arian race. Iran was influenced by Arabs only when Islam entered Iran but just b-cause theyre muslims dosent mean they r Arabs!? I always say Persian or Persia rather than Iran ( although both are beautiful) b-cause when u say Iran they mess u up w/t Arabs and all those Political stuff... but Persia reminds me of Ancient Persia and History!

I'm not certain that not knowing that Persia strictly means Iran makes one illiterate. I think illiteracy has more to do with not knowing about punctuation, capitalization, spelling. Even p-r-o-n-u-n-c-i-a-t-i-o-n isn't as much an indicator of illiteracy as poor spelling.
Maybe "most" Americans just couldn't really care less about this crap?
Oh, thank you so much Hector sir.

Persia has been Iran for quite a long time. Younger people might never have heard of Persia.

sweetheart, look up the definition of "illiterate". What you describe would be IGNORANCE, not illiteracy. And ignorance isn't a moral flaw, it's simply a lack of knowledge about something. EDUCATE people if you encounter ignorance, but you can't expect people to know everything!
Now, what YOU have written and all its errors, now THAT would be considered illiterate.

I think you'll find that most English people don't know that either. Seems to me you have a bee in your bonnet about America. If you want to get pissed off with USA talk about their level of toxic emittions rather than their lack of geographic knowledge.
