Have you ever read Carl Jung? He explains that all the characters in mythology are actually the parts of human consciousness. http://www.iloveulove.com/psychology/jung/jungarchetypes.htm

Joseph Campbell also explained myth & mythology in psycological terms. Many of his concepts were Jungian but he did not agree with every point Carl Jung made. His books are very interesting if you are looking for an explaination of why people need myths.

I happen to believe that myths are metaphors for life. If you read any myth, you will find things that help you to be a better person. These stories were told to children so they would understand why doing certain things at certain times was important. It also explained the consequence of wrong action. Many of these myths took on such importance that they turned into religions.

There are many types of myth, the heroes journey, creation stories, seasonal stories, explanation of the elements and seasons, good vs. evil and a few other catagories.

Myth is a very important part of any culture. It defines for the people the why of their existance and in many cases why there are certain laws that must be obeyed. The myth will also show what will happen if they don't obey them.

The reason we keep myths alive is that they still have many things to teach us.

Myths are important. They gives us patterns of life of which to aspire. They teach us consequences of actions. They give us examples of hope, love, hate, destruction...and the result of delving in too much excess of them. Myths are stories to teach a principle...so we may learn, grow and prompt our thoughts to go beyond our present situations.

Myths are created by people with live their life in fear. They are paranoid and insecure. They create myths to justify their fears, and in some instances create a "cure" to physiologically assure themselves that they are safe.

Myths are created by people who crave power, and by instilling that fear within the rest, they can provide the solution and have the power.

Myths are created by people who are annoyed by irritatingly fearful people.

The myths of old and of nowadays are there to teach us about who we were as a people and who we are now. "Those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it."
