Do we, as humans, have the responsibility to strive to be the best we can be? What if fulfilling this responsiblity conflicts with personal happiness/contentment in life?

Oops, forgot that was the Army slogan. This was not meant to have anything to do with that.
As an example, suppose John graduated from high school as valedictorian. Instead of going to college, he goes flips burgers for the rest of his life. Granted this is far-fetched, but he's happy with that. Does he have the responsiblity to do more than that?

Yes.
You can't truly be happy unless you are doing good. Your personal likes and dislikes will demonstrate your gifts. Hopefully what you like to do will benefit mankind and Be in God's Will.
God Bless You, ;-)

Yes, we do. It is a personal challenge... there is no other outside influence that can make you be the best you can be. It is wanting to build the best product that can be built with the qualities, attributes, characteristics and morals that you choose to live by... it is a daily challenge... like playing the best sports game you can to WIN... It is designing a better person than you started out being... producing the best product with the ingredients that you have to work with.. and you make the greatest creation you can... It is something that you wish to do so that you become more "attractive" with each passing day... as beauty comes from the inside... and you will ALWAYS have conflicts and occasional personal unhappiness... this is the challenge in life... it is not a failure to have problems... that shows success...it is HOW YOU HANDLE YOUR PROBLEMS that makes you a success in life... and this is being an adult... by being a responsible person, no matter what the situation... You do your best... People will respect you and look upon you with awe and respect. Good Luck with your life... seek to fulfill your daily responsibility, and when you go to bed at night, you will feel contentment.

you have a choice. either you strive for your perfection, or you choose personal happiness. but i think that happiness is more important than your best and sometimes is the same. Romantics believed in eternal strive even with the possibility of not being happy. They believed that if you are contented, you stop evolving. That just shows that humans aren't always right.

yes we do
but we need to understand what best we can means and who and what for.
we have to also know what is contentment and happiness is in the first place.
we at the current time have no idea,
we feel its to gain all we can with no concern for what is around us.
what i mean is the way things are now we will all be dead before too long or if we arnt there wont be many orther forms of life left.

Being the best that you can be incorporates personal happiness/contentment. Therefore, if you strive to be the best you can be you strive to increase your personal happiness/contentment as well as improving yourself in other respects.

no, you don't have that responsibility, you have the freedom to choose what makes you happy, and if you have great potential do accomplish something but you feel that your happiness will be found somewhere else, then no you don't have any responsibility to humanity to do the other thing. Now maybe to your family you have that responsibility but not to humanity, its your choice in that aspect!

Well, you have to carefully select what "best" means for you. Often times, people confond "best" with "rich" or "successful", not bothering themselves with less visible forms of betterment : a happy family, respect in the comunity, inner peace etc.
You have to factor these too to obtain your own version of "best" and then strive to obtain that.
