Screen savers were originally created because old monitors would "burn in" whatever was left on the screen for a long time. Even after turning off the monitor, you could see whatever was burnt in. A screen saver would prevent this by either blanking the screen or displaying a moving image after a short period of inactivity.
Modern monitors don't suffer from burn in but screen savers are still used because people like them.

I know it's been mentioned twice, but screensavers were originally there to prevent a still image from burning itself on the screen. Old CRT monitors made in the mid 90s or before, could easily suffer from burn-ins in short periods of time.
As computers jumped in popularity, newer CRT designs reduced the chances of this happening. Even though it's not much of an issue anymore, CRT's can still suffer from a burn-in if a still image is left on for a very, very long period of time.
In addition, realize that having less content displayed on the screen during a screensaver can reduce the power it consumes. Letting it go to sleep, though, is the best way to reduce it aside from turning it all the way off.
LCD's do not suffer from burn-in, though DLP, rear-projection TV's, and plasma can.

In computers Screen Savers were introduce to save the screen from permanent burning. However present days screen saver are more screen Burners rather than saving. The present day monitors are very good quality so there is not much affect on them. Now we use Screen Savers as it looks good.
More mobile phone its used to save screen and battery power in some cases.

They avoid burning an image into your screen. If you leave the same image displayed for a very long time the screen will be permanently damaged by this.

when you dont access or use your computer ....they appear on the screen....use??...well for example when your at office and your boss calls you ...you leave your system and you dont want others to peep at your computer ....so you leave urgently without closing the monitor or shutting down the system...so then this comes in hand...your screensaver appears and prevents others from peeping at your computer from other cabins....
