It technically works out, if you think about it. In one apartment, you have Monica and Rachel. Rachel doesn't really land a great job in the fashion industry until later, but Monica worked in the food industry (catering, chef, eventually head chef) and made decent money. Across the hall is Chandler and Joey. Joey may be an actor, but he does eventually land a few plays and the soap opera gig and a few movie-related gigs, too. Meanwhile, Chandler works with statistical analysis and data reconfiguration (and the 'wenus') and makes plenty of money, especially after his raise in Season One. Ross has a doctorate in paleontology and is a professor, so his apartment is well taken care of. Phoebe may be struggling with the massage business, but she did have a roommate for a while that nobody knew about (Denise!) so that's the only hazy area.

The show realized this. One episode brought it up. Monica's apartment is rent controlled. I think Chandler had a good job. He usually pd. Joey's half of the rent.

Yeah... and what did Phoebe do? We know about her massage career, but what did she do before?

I'm not sure about the U. S. slaries, but I guess Chandler and Ross had good jobs, and later Monica and Rachel too.
