It is not recommend to release a pet snake into the wild. Since most snakes are not indigenous to your area, you may be risking not only its life but possibly other wildlife... bring it to a shelter or a pet shop.

Frankly speaking, I'm surprised by your tone. It sounds like the snake is your pet. However it is obviously not otherwise you would not have wanted to get rid of it.But still, there is an affectionate tone in your question which suggests your dilemma over whether it would be right to abandon your snake in the unfamiliar woods..There cannot be any definite answer to this query. You have simply given too little info. If you are seriously eager to get rid of the snake, then don't think so much and go leave it in the woods. There are many snakes in there and it will find its friends by itself! You don't have to worry your head off about that!

If it was a wild caught snake from your area let it back into the wild. If you bought the snake from someone or a pet store it is illegal to release them into the wild. It is also crual. If you live in the southern US the snake could survive our winters and you have just released a preditor into the ecosystem that doesnt' belong. If you live in the northern US you would have given the snake a death warrent. Locate a animal shelter in your area. That or there are many herp clubs out there who would take in a wayward snake.

You must find out what sort of natural environment this species lives in. You can't let a tropical snake in a wood where the habitay is totally different. Otherwise, I am sure there is a wildlife society (WWF or a local one) that could arrange to liberate it in its own habitat.
Of course, you can also find a serpentarium, a zoo or a pet shop that sells snakes to give it to.

I think you should be more specific about what kind of snake your getting rid of, I mean what if it,s this humongous thing that likes to eat cats & dogs, how would you feel then letting it go in the woods, & how far are the woods from civilians & someones pet.

it depends on how long you have had the snake if you have had it for a long time like let's say since it was little then no don't it wont survive on it's own. But if you have had it for a day or two then it will be fine

if it is a snake that is commonly found in your area in the wild, it's probably alright to release it.however, if the snake is not domestic(found in your area in the wild), you may be breaking the law by releasing it.it may also create an ecological problem by introducing a non domestic snake into your area.the best thing to do if you want rid of it is to sell it, give it away, or return it to the petshop you bought it.

NO, there's little to no chance the environment will suit it very well, if it's a nonnative snake, like a boa or other petshops snake, not to mention, that would be illegal

No, it would not be okay to leave him in the woods, he does not know how to take care of himself. Take him to the local animal shelter or find out a reptile rescue society that can take him in if you can't find a home for him.
