It's your natural Flight or Fight response. You get a stimuli of someone, or something is coming from behind and you don't know if it is dangerous or not so your reaction is to get out of the way. There are people who have a quite adverse reaction to that kind stimulus and will attack the person. This reaction is positively common in military personal who have seen combat.
Some people just react differently and will not respond the same as others, or you know that you are in no danger, and do not panic.

All the sense organs of a safe-living social being(persons living in society among organised ones like him) is generally focused to the front side, and the shock or scare is due to unexpected unusual noise from rear side ! Try living in a dense forest for some time, and out of necessity, you will get used to focusing your attention in all sides ( 360 degrees) and there will be hardly any such scare from any side!

Some people are a little more high strung than you. This could be dangerous as I have seen some people react to it and hurt the one that scared them.
