Why? Why? Why does everyone overlook Hellfighters??? It went down smooth as chocolate mouse. Not only does it display the best of "the good ol' boys" wink, swagger, and camraderie that made "The Duke" charming. Plus the landscapes and fires are amazing, and the back story of putting out oil fires was very original. Anyone who likes Armegedon, will love Hellfighters.

An excellent question to ask
If he were alive to answer, he would say The Alamo for the sheer fact that this movie was his dream project and he poured literally everything he had into the film (and barely broke even on it).
Blue Schism - the kid who plays Little Jake is his son, John Ethan Wayne
For me, there are a number of his films which I have enjoyed over the years. However, if I must pick one movie, then I shall nominate The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. This movie portrayed John Wayne as the anti-hero Tom Doniphon, someone who you wanted to win or wanted on your side but felt that he was there really for himself. The supporting cast, including excellent work from Jimmy Stewart (Ranse Stoddard), Lee Marvin (Liberty Valance), and Vera Miles (Hallie), this film brought out a different look into the taming of the Wild West. The line towards the end of the movie "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend" is said, you can feel the strong sentiment about how we feel towards our culture and history at many points.
John Wayne should have won an Academy Award for his work on this film. Its dark overtones and blurring of the lines between good and bad were extremely powerful, especially when considering that this movie was released back in 1962.

Wow, I agree with Icehound, it's so hard to make a choice. I love all of John Wayne's movies. My Dad loved John Wayne and took me to all his movies. So when I see John Wayne I think of my Dad. I guess I would have to say Sands of Iwo Jima. I cry every time I see it. He put so much feeling into it. He's my hero. It just does'nt seem like kids today have a hero anymore. As Sgt. Stryker in Sands of Iwo Jima he was a true leader. And he had a big heart, even though he couldn't show that to his men. It's excellent.

I loved The Sons of Katie Elder, The Longest Day, The Searchers, The Quiet Man and The Sand of Iwo Jima. So many more but I can't put them all on here!
I can't really choose a favorite. But I really liked the Sand of Iwo Jima. It might be because its the first John Wayne film I've ever seen, but certain things stay in my mind from that movie.

Big Jake. I just love his role in that one, and the kid who plays Little Jake is so cute. I think also it's because something about John Wayne reminds me of my dad.(who loves every John Wayne movie.) who I would watch all the John Wayne movies with.
I knew Little Jake was his son, just couldn't remember the face very well and was thinking I was just confuzzled, lol. Thanks for reminding me, icehound. I knew for a fact one of his sons' (Patrick)played James.

The Shootist
Wayne's last and finest performance. It is him, Jimmy Stewart, together again, with Scatman Crothers, Ron Howard and a slew of western notables to show how a gunfighter ought to go out, with his boots on in a showdown, outnumbered, outgunned, and finally betrayed by a stranger. It's Jesse James and OK Coral rapped together with El Dorado and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, all in one. you couldn't ask for much more than that.

The searchers. Because no one plays an archetype or a stereotype. And it has a teenaged Natalie Wood in it.
It was one of the first movies to deal with Native vs Non Native matters in a less than black and white manner (yes, it is a color film, but that's not what I'm talking about and you know it.)

True Grit. There are so many one-liners in that movie that have become part of my own vocabulary. It had guts, tension, sentimentality, pathos, charm, drinking, shooting, and a country-and-western singer with really careful hair. It was the best. I bought it on VHS.
