The best budget gaming processor for under $400 would have to be this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116238 Yes, AMD's processors are slightly better for gaming than Intel's, but that's faster than AMD's cheapest dual-core processor, and is $150 less.
Buying a dual-core processor now prepares you for the future. Besides, the video card is what determines how well you can game, not the system processor. And I haven't owned an Intel processor since 1998, but for now, the Intel's have the definite price advantage.

Something like http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80725-8 Would probably serve you very well.
However, you can get even an Athlon 64(bit) 3800mhz for 139. Then again this is the AM2 socket.
Either way, AMD is best budget gaming processor imo

Get an AMD from newegg.com or off of eBay: they are powerhouses and are cheaper than Intel ones. Look online for coupons for newegg.
