It is not that they move to small towns, it is that they never leave them and have no reference for change

A guy from my small town now plays for the yankees, also his parents were both professional athletes. Doesn't mean he is open minded, but hey you can find an idiot in every town, and big cities have a lot more idiots because they have more people. It is a matter of culture, actually. In a smaller test group the individual subjects will have more influence on the culture as a whole, meaning keeping the culture under control is actually viable in smaller towns considering the limited number of subjects to interact with. It is just human nature and science at work. Nothing special. When you deal with people who know people you know every day, and if personality is defined by people you know... voila, sameness because the norm. with a million people, all of your friends can be in a certain niche and when you have dinner encountering people you know or people who know people you know is much more likely to not occur, where when there are significantly less, the odds of someone having significant relations with an acquaintance are slim to none.

People in small towns are a community. People who enter small towns from outside and criticise without seeking to understand or fit in are the ones who are narrow minded.

Having had my own horriffic experience with small-town life, my best guess is that small towns often lack the culture that cities have to offer, and the people who have lived there for some time wind up more or less closed off to the outside world.

I just wish the small town mindset weren't leaking over into pop culture. I blame the midwest as a whole for this.

America seems filled with narrow minded towns, religious and self righteous bores. How did it get that way I wonder. Very sad and actually it is very concerning.

well often ignorance comes from lack of exposure to different things. small towns are often homogenous and people are rarely confronted with things that are different than them. this can lead to the belief that what is right for oneself is right for everyone no matter what, and does not allow for much freedom. on the flip side many small town people can be very accepting and hospititable whereas there are plenty of narrow minded folks in cities as well, dont always judge people on their geography.

its the small towns that make people narrow minded, since they're not exposed to new things.

The world is full of them. Because small towns have fewer people, they are more noticeable there.
