The pocket is the immediate area created by the offensive linemen when they hold off the defense. When a QB stands in the pocket, he holds his ground in that space, searching for another player to get the football to. If the QB throws the ball away while in the pocket, that is called intentional grounding; however, if the QB is either flushed (forced) out of the pocket or chooses to scramble out of the pocket and then throws it away, then there is no flag. Depending on how well the offensive linemen play, the pocket can either be small and quickly collapsed or huge, giving the QB so much time that he could sit back in a recliner and read a newspaper before he has to get rid of the ball.

The line is to make a semi-circle around the QB to give him protection. When the QB stays in this area it is called a pocket. That is when QB is standing in the pocket.

the "pocket" is the area the QB is standing/moving around in from left tackle to right tackle and behind the linemen. once he moves out of that area, he is out of the "pocket."
