It means the computer hasn't been used for a few minutes. The person isn't at the computer....

Idle means the person is online but they're not using the IM service (chatting) at the precise moment.

It means the person has not moved their mouse or had contact with their computer for that amt of " idle " time

it means they haven't touched their keyboard for a while....they might have left their computer desk and their messenger is just sitting "idle".
