In FIFA, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have separate memberships and have their own leagues. In the Olympics, GB and NI have a united membership to the IOC.

The term British includes the countries of England, wales and Scotland but not Ireland. The term United Kingdom includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Most sports competitions started between these countries and slowly included other countries. Therefore each county plays under it's own name. The Olympics are about the only well known competitions where the teams come from Britain but there are other sports such as rowing, figure skating etc.
