An anesthesiologist administers a mixture of gases before and during surgery. However, an oral surgeon can also provide some kind of anesthesia if you are going to have an extraction. A dentist may use what they call a "local" which is an injection that numbs the site where he may do a root canal or fill a cavity.

Podiatrists (foot specialist) may give a local if they need to remove something from your foot that would be painful.

Any doctor can give you a local injection if he/she is doing minor out-patient surgery in the office.
