Your question is hard to understand. Energy is what makes everything work - but there's so many different types of energy it is hard to generalize based on one word. Chemical energy, for example, like the energy generated by ATP, is the fundamental basis for all life on this planet. ATP drives every cell process, from the smallest bacteria to the largest whale.

All living organisms need energy of some form. Autotrophic organisms utilize solar energy and turns it into glucose through photosynthesis. Heterotrophic organisms obtains energy by taking in other organisms. A very very very long time ago, some random prokaryotic cells engulp the ancestors of mitochondria and choloroplast. This step leads to the difference of how living organisms attain energy.

Hello Michele,
We have good answers above from the currently known theories; I will ad the Matrix’s Theory viewpoint.
What is energy and living organisms?
Energy and mass are derivative states from an essence: universal bits-information. When universal information is free and doing its function, it is energy; when it is imprisoned, stopped, it is mass.
Living organisms are complexes and evolved packages of those bits-information. They are alive just because they are being supplied with those bits-information in free state for to replace the used ones – which were imprisoned like mass for to makes the organism to grow. And living organisms can evolve when they get new kind of those informations.
But what is bits-universal information? They are the fragment of the system that would have existing before the Big Bang, before the Universe’s origins. Like before your body’s origins there were the informations (genes) of your parents.
We believe that behind, besides and surrounding every matter there is a non-material substance, which you can call “dark matter” or “Quantum Sea” or “spatial ether”. We believe that from this quantum sea is coming micro-quantum-tornadoes of two different groups: one with spin right and other with spin left. When a quantum-tornado-spin right join with its counterpart spin left, they materializes, and in this way we have matter’s origins.
But, these micro-tornadoes have at least seven properties (spin’s direction, size, velocity, density, etc.) These properties are flexible, so you have more or less velocity, more or less density and so on. These variations can be defined by numbers, in the way that there is a quantum micron tornado which identity can be: S (a) Vel 3.445.014 D 2,674 Vol 3,576938… So this quantum tornado is unique, different of all others, and it is specific information. It is a bit-universal information, like a gene, but, a biological gene is a larger package of those quantum-genes.
Why living organisms eat food? They are just getting at organic compounds the informations that compose their last common ancestor – the Milk Way – and those informations are coming through the sun. It keeps the living system alive. And they are avoiding the process that is killing the Milk Way – entropy. As said icehoundxx here, “(without additional inputs of energy, a closed system will simply lose energy and descend into a more chaotic state until it can no longer function).” He only forgot to say that the chaotic state is the foundation where arises the ordered and self-organizing flow. So, the Milk Way is a closed system attacked by entropy creating Earth’s biosphere like chaotic state and living organisms are the resuscitation of Milk Way.
Final conclusion? Energy affect us and every living organisms supplying copies of particles-information that we had stocked as body’s mass and supplying new informations which are added to our genetic package driven us to evolution.
Why energy drive us to evolution? – Because we are the Universe today (the astronomic systems you are seeing in the sky are fossils of our ancestors), we are the Universe like a baby learning to walk, and we are going to be genetic and natural son of that system living before and besides the Universe. We have no idea about what that system can be and if you want call it “the big atom”, or “God” or other name, we respect your opinion because you can be right.

Energy, in the simplest of explanations, is the fuel that life needs in order to be sustained and maintain normal functionality. Without energy, we would simply shut down . . . all energy lost is the end result of the Second Law of Thermodynamics - Entropy (without additional inputs of energy, a closed system will simply lose energy and descend into a more chaotic state until it can no longer function).
