Hey bro,
If you want to be an astronaut, the first thing I can tell you is to major in something that you love. Of course, it has to be scientific. You can be a doctor, veterinarian, engineer, astronomer, physicist, almost anything. The thing is that you have to be good at what you do. That is why I say go for something you love. A masters or PhD would definitely help as well. I'm pretty sure that if you go to a good big school and if you have the chance to come to America, you will be fine. I met Stephen Robinson this year, he graduated from the college I go to, and I can tell you, I would never expect as astronaut to come from my school. Never be discouraged about becoming an astronaut, though it is very difficult, if you keep going for it, you will eventually make it. A good example for you would be Kalpana Chawla (I hope I spelled that right.) She was from India and she became a career astronaut. The best of luck to you. :)

You're in India so why not try out Russia as they have better foreign relations with India than America does. мгу (Moscow State University) or нгу (Novosibirsk State University) would be the best. America is doing much less manned space exploration nowadays whereas Russia is still active, e.g. the recent collaboration in sending up a Chinese shuttle (I think this was at Baikonur). Russia will probably be looking at doing some collaborative work with India soon whereas i can't imagine America ever collaborating with anyone.
As far as I know you have to be in the defence forces to be an Astronaut/Cosmonaut which means moving to another country, getting citizenship, joining the air force and studying engineering at the defence force academy, working up the ranks in record time, having some political connections and then just plain getting lucky. Most likely due to the delays in gettting citizenship will mean you'll be too old to be eligible by the time you're high enough in rank and politically connected. Hence it'll be more likely to happen if you don't have to move countries given some future aerospace collaboration with India.
Most likely Astronaut as a career is unlikely but aerospace engineer is a good pick. I'd advise stay in India for the time being, you speak English well enough that you don't need to study abroad.
I'm not too sure if there's any specialised aerospace engineering degrees in India. The best pick I can think of would be to do a combined B.Sc./B.Eng. in Physics or Maths for the Sc part and Mechanical Engineering for the Eng part. Then you'll need to do a M.Eng. at least.

Stick with ISRO. As long as you have any degree in engineering/math degree and are physically ok to go to space(do not have heart conditions, can withstand high Gs and excwss myopia) you should be able to become an astronaut. Are you confusing astronomer with astronomer or aeronautical engineer? A lot of people do that.

Doesn't matter as long as you have a degree in engineering or anything mathematics or science you can apply to be an astronaut. Check out my link below...
