Redline 20w50 full synthetic race oil at 8.95 a quart, or if strapped for cash, Castrol Syntec 5w20 at about $5.

BMW recommends and uses Castrol when you have them change the oil! I use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic. never had a problem with it!

Most modern name brand systhetics should work well. I've never had an engine failure while using sysnthetics. Also, since this is a slightly older car, you may want to stick with 5w or 10w. 0ws would lead to higher oil consumption.
