Mainstream popular music requires no effort. It gives you a simple beat and lyrics, and you get to just be lazy and listen to it. Jazz requires you to listen and appreciate what's going on. I don't claim to be a big jazz fan. I own some, but I don't dare call myself an afficianado. I'm far from it. I've owned "Kind of Blue" and "A Love Supreme" for over 10 years, and I STILL can't wrap my feeble little brain around either one. I won't even walk past the Wynton Marsalis CDs in the store. I'm a product of the 80s, where mindless music was the specialty. Jazz is cerebral. Jazz has to not only be FELT but it also has to be LEARNED. That's a tall order for a lot of people, and I've become convinced that some people just can't do it, even if they want to. I grew up on pop and country, and I am still grappling with jazz. It is true artistry, where they don't just paint outside the lines, they don't even use a canvas! I have a lot of respect for jazz musicians.

Jazz has a certain element of spontaneity that just doesn't exist in the structure of rock music. Many people like to stick to this rock framework because it is comfortable and feels 'normal' to them. Jazz jumps outside that framework significantly, so to some it sounds unappealing because it is outside of what they know.

A lot of people hate music they can't easily understand. I like jazz and classical but I know a lot of people who hate both. They just don't get it.

Jazz is awesome. People are just primitive and listen to racy, sex-inciting things rather than music that moves you (like jazz).

Many people can't understand the complexities of Jazz music, so they don't like it.
When one is fed a steady diet of what passes for popular music these days, it's no wonder.

Jazz is all about creative improvisation...go with the flow. As with other genres of music, not everyone is able to appreciate it since different people have different appeals to rhythm and sounds.
