The word dilate means to open up.
The doctors and nurses do a vaginal check to see if your cervex has dilated. It needs to do so that the baby's head can move down the birth canal.
You should get a book about all of this if you are having a baby.
I will try to explain a bit for you. The uterous holds the growing baby. At the base of the uterous is the cervex. I magine a sock and you have put a ball in it. The ankle part of the sock is narrow, but it you want to pull the ball out the anklet part of the sock has to stretch wide to pull out the ball. It is the same thing haveing a baby. The baby's head pushes down through the crevex stretching it and as it stretches it becomes thinner. The nurses and or doctors will do a vaginal exam to see how much the cervex has dilated. They judge it in centimeters 1 to 10
If your cervex has dilated to 10 it means that it is open wide enough for the baby's head to pass through the birth canal (the vaginal area.
