When researching about mixed emotions people have for squirrels, I have found that people who love squirrels know a lot about them. This includes people who have been close to squirrels, nursed them as babies, or studied them in books. Likewise, people who hate squirrels know nothing, often accusing squirrels of spreading rabies and other diseases when they do not. Squirrel haters also think all kinds of negative lies about squirrels. I suppose another way of asking my question would be: Why do squirrel haters prefer ignorance over researched information?

i find that only people who are totally ignorant of a species can hate it. those who bother to learn about it, whether it's squirrels, sharks, spiders, snakes or whatever, find themselves at the very least acquiring respect for the animals, and often love.
so if people have a problem with squirrels, they will hang on to the ignorance because if they don't know a thing about them, they can take whatever action they feel they should take to take care of the problem.

Any subject is like that... I recently gave a presentation on the Arctic Wildlife Refuge to my college class. Before the speech many of my classmates were like "Oh screw the animals living there, we need the oil." I presented a very good case on why it's bad to drill there, and afterward a majority of them had changed their minds. Personally, I'm a big squirrel fan. My grandparents have cared for generations of red squirrels. Become a squirrel educator in your community and help change the minds of the ignorant squirrel haters.

Perhaps typical of all love - hate thoughts of people. Why would I spend a lot of time studying something that doesn't interest me? Unless of course it is on how to best combat whatever it is.

I, for example, don't like the western flower thrip. I know a lot about it, but still don't like it.

Also, your question is based upon anecdotal evidence. Hard to show either way.

What percentage of people who you have surveyed that hate squirrels vs what percentage of people that like them can answer some standard questions about squirrel behaviours? Just curious... I know a lot of people that love squirrels that don't know a lot about them other than that they are cute. I also know folks that think squirrels are pests that eat their bird seeds that spend hours observing their behaviour to figure out how to keep the birdseed away from them. Kind of funny actually.

G-d easily created squirrels in His photo. that's the squirrels that get into Heaven. human beings purely have this conceited theory that we are particular. See, that is why the squirrels provide us those *seems* when we pontificate the Gospel. although maximum individuals do not understand this, Jesus became easily a important squirrel. Jesus loves all squirrels both, yet they might want to settle for him as their non-organic and organic father to get the badness removed from their nuts. Peace!

Well, i'll admit i'm not an expert on squirrels. I like most species of squirrels with one major exception: Ground squirrels. i am NOT ignorant of the reason i don't like them. the reason i do not like ground squirels is pretty much because they are nothing more than a docturnal, fuzzy-tailed rat. i live in a rural area where squirrels often become road kill. it is not uncommon to see a dead squirrel in the road and several others eating the dead body. i don't like them any more than i like rats. this opinion has been fomed by personal observation, not by nature books and cutesy stories.

I disagree with your premise. People who like to eat squirrels know a lot about them. Tree squirrel eat nuts are tasty and like hard wood trees.
Ground squirrls are like rats. They will eat anything and in California can spread the plague. Yea the same plague that devestrated Europe- good reason to hate squirrels

Interestingly, if you research ANY topic, you will find that almost all hate is based in ignorance of the subject hated.
