Legislation is always being passed to limit the age of cigarette buyers, and limit places where people can smoke. On the other hand, the tobacco industry is a thriving business, unless your crop is distroyed by weather or insects, and then you just get a subsidy from the government. Maybe the real question here is what reason is there that cigarettes have not been made illegal?

Public drunkenness was a big problem in turn of the century American. A few decades later prohibition was instated and in a few years America saw it's highest crime rates ever! Banning anything popular thing in history has had grave results

In Australia it is virtually impossible to find anywhere in a public place including clubs and restaurants, railway stations and now beaches where you can smoke cigarettes. I don't know how this would work in Egypt, but thinking about it, I could never have imagined many Australians accepting and observing the rules 20 years ago either. As people become more educated about the health risks and high mortality rate associated with smoking they may change their minds ISA It only affect me when I have had to travel with people who smoke in their cars. Then I cant wait to get home and wash my hair and have a shower as I can smell the cigarettes on me and my clothes. Phew!.

first and foremost. making the cigarette illegal will means a lot of unemployment for those working currently at that industry. just think if 10,000 people are now working on cigarette industry in your country, the factory workers and the farmers, it means 10,000 people will be loosing their jobs, next each one of them may have 3-5 or more dependents, meaning 50000 people will lost their means of source of food, because no income. and what if unfortunately you father and mother work in that industry, it means you and your family will not eat. Its very hard on the part of the government but it the reality, so the only thing the givernment can do is give public advice of its effect to your health. we have the choice to smoke or not,or to be drunk, use it. hope it brighten you up the way it did to me when i asked that same question to myself years ago.

lastly... i don't think you don't want to stop those people to continually messing their lungs and liver.. let them suffer, its their choice..they are dumb enough and wise enough to decide for themselves. just don't add up with the statistics ok,, try menthos! God bless!

Cigarettes are not illegal for the same reasons that marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, LSD, mushrooms and any other "drug" should not be illegal.

Because it's making a crime of something that is not a crime.

Drugs can "ruin" lives. But in all respect, it is my life to ruin if I so choose to do so.

I smoke, now because I am addicted and because it's a nice break from thinking. (Smoke meaning tobacco.)

I don't drink, I don't use stimulants, I don't go around robbing people.

It's up to the individual to keep a house over their head, food on their table and shoes on their feet, not the government.

I do not need, nor want my government to protect me from myself. Nor do I think that they have any right to do so.

All I ask of my government is to put murderers, thieves, rapists, child molesters and wife beaters in prison. Not stoners, not junkies and not "burnt out" hippies.

It really is up to you to stop yourself from using drugs. It's up to you to decide if you want to see life in an novel, yet disturbing haze or through the average mind-state of a human being.

The governments job is to *protect* our morals not *police* them.

You know, Thinking that you know what is better for everybody than they do is getting to be the norm anymore. Dont you realize that at some point , some group of people is going to take a liberty away from you for the same reason? This country is getting pretty bad because of it and I think we are on a fast track to a police state but people like you are so caught up being smug about your self proclaimed savior views that you dont see our rights slipping away never to return. Live and let live(or die) .. really its none of your damn business what people do with their own lives.

The same reason that some prescription drug cards are paying the pharmacies close to or below cost on prescriptions and the pharmacies being accused by big government of price gauging RX's when in fact it's the pharmaceutical companies - kickbacks. The biggest drug dealers in this country are sitting in Congress.

Do you have any idea how much money the government makes from taxing cigarettes? Don't hold your breath waiting for them to give that up anytime soon. Also look up how much money the cigarette companies donate to both the Republican and Democratic parties each year --- multi-millions.

I'd say because you (the nonsmoker) have no right to place a higher value on the smoker's life than he himself does. The same could be said of seat belt and helmet laws-- your life means your life to risk or harm.

making things illegal cause a blackmarket and that makes the crime rate go up..so I would say not to make them illegal right now, our economy cannot afford it.
