Ringing in Ears
Tinnitus is "ringing" in the ears and/or other noises that are perceived in the absence of any external noise source. It is estimated that approximately 20% of all Americans experience some degree of ringing in ears - tinnitus at one time or another.

Objective tinnitus is the rarest form of ringing in the ears, and it consists of a ringing in ears sound that may be audible to other people standing near the person suffering from the ringing in the ears. Ringing in the ears and ringing in ears are usually caused by vascular diseases or anomalies, repetitive muscle contractions, or inner ear structural defects. The ringing in ear sounds heard by the sufferer are generally external to the auditory system. It is possible that benign causes, such as noise from the jaw joint, openings of the Eustachian tubes, or repetitive muscle contractions may be the cause of objective ear ringing tinnitus. Objective tinnitus - ringing in the ears can be an early sign of increased intracranial pressure and is often overshadowed by other neurologic abnormalities.

Subjective tinnitus is the more common form of ringing in the ears. This form of ringing in ears may occur anywhere in the auditory system and is much less understood, with the causes being many and open to debate. The ringing in the ear sounds heard by the sufferer may range from metallic ringing, buzzing, blowing, or roaring to a clanging, popping, or sporadic beating. This form of Tinnitus has also been characterized by ringing ear noises in the head which are not generated externally - including chirping, screeching, hissing, ringing, roaring, or pulsating types of ear ringing.

There is no known cure for tinnitus and ringing in ears. The ringing in the ears condition has recently emerged in the medical world as new treatment methods are being studied to help increase the chance of success in dealing with ringing in the ears. For the time being, many people with subjective tinnitus - ringing in the ears have been able to get relief by using various herb and mineral supplements.

Tinnitus is a symptom of a problem. The problem may be as simple as high blood pressure or as complicated as a tumor on your hearing nerve. There are many things that can cause tinnitus or ringing in your ears. It is imperative that you seek a complete medical and audiological evaluation to determine what the problem is and then you can treat the problem. Many people suffer from tinnitus and some can get help through treatment. There is no one pill that cures tinnitus unfortunately.

I encourage you to check out the American Tinnitus Association at www.ata.org.

Go see an ENT specialist and begin your evaluation process. Your audiologist can counsel you regarding your options and educate you on what you can do to control your tinnitus. Stay away from caffeine, salt, alchol, cigarettes, aspirin, and stress and fatigue. These will definitely make your tinnitus worse.

Good luck.

Ringing in your ears is called tinnitis. It is a result of damaged neve endings in the inner ear. Most people have tinnitis to some degree. Excessive loud noise can cause this. There is no known cure. However, you can condition yourself to not notice it by listening to "white noise" (quiet background sound, such as aTV or radio). Also, avoid coffee, alcohol, and some over the counter and prescription drugs.

Listen to music at a much reduced volume. You don't need to goto a doctor. Hearing cells can be repaired. For instance if you goto a rock concert and your ears ring bad, if you don't listen to music loud for 2 weeks your ears will heal. If you listen to headphones or any music past 80db for more than 45 minutes you are hurting your ears.

Basically what you should do if you listen to music loud, is play your music on the lowest setting possible. Listen to the whisper and use that as your reference for hearing. Now you can listen to music quieter and it psychologically seems louder. Same thing if you have your music at 90db, you can bring it down to 80db for a minute, then bring it up to 82db, which psychologically feels like it has become twice as loud.

Playing music extra loud is painful and actually hurts. That is why when crowds get bad at concerts the engineer plays it really loud for a few seconds. Essentially it hits everyone like they got zapped and has a calming effect.
