Because in more cases than not, most burps do not come in the "silent, but deadly" form ;) You could walk through a crowd and let loose a "silent, but deadly" fart and no one would be the wiser of the supplier whereas that would not be true with a burp.

I suppose that's a matter of opinion. I'm 25 and am pretty sure that farting and burping will always be funny.

Blurping can be seen as it's done on top and a big and loud blurp is rather embarassing but farting is done underneath and will be done without an expression. Smelly farts can also point out a finger to anyone among the crowd so no one knows who actually farted.

no, in fact burping and farting are natural body processes. Only "civilized" cultures perceive it improper.

I think they are both rather awful to do in public. It's rather simple, if you feel that you can't squeeze it out silently, just excuse yourself to the restroom.
