Description: Email rumor
Circulating since: September 2004
Status: Mostly false

Summary: Forwarded email (example below) warns that a directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published and urges users to enter their cell phone numbers on a federal 'Do Not Call' registry to prevent unsolicited calls from telemarketers.

Comments: While it's true that the major wireless phone providers (Verizon excepted) have announced their intention to establish a 411 directory of customers' cell phone numbers in the near future, it is not true that they plan to "publish" said directory for any and all to read. Participating companies say the numbers will be made available only with customer consent, and only via telephone to users who dial directory assistance and pay a fee.

The companies also insist the numbers will never be accessible to telemarketers. In fact, per FCC regulations, telemarketers are already prohibited from calling cell phone numbers using automated dialers, which are standard in the industry.

Not everyone is convinced that consumers' privacy will be adequately shielded, however, as evidenced by a privacy protection bill already introduced in Congress which would modify the plan to allow 411 callers to be directly connected to requested parties without the latter's phone numbers being given out. Lawmakers have yet to act on the legislation.

Cell phone numbers can easily be added to the Do Not Call Registry

In any case, the Federal Trade Commission does allow cell phone users to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry — the same one already in force for landlines — either on the Web or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

Contrary to what most variants of the email rumor claim, there is no 31-day, 16-day, or 8-day deadline for adding cell phone numbers to the Do Not Call list — indeed, there is no deadline whatsoever.

Yeah this is real... the website that is. As for the phone number I am not sure. I have personally listed all my phone numbers and plus my boss asked me to put all our business phones onto the list also. It really works. I do not get solicitors anymore. Although just so you know that companies can still call you, but it has to be a survey and not them trying to sell you something. Do it while you can, but remember it is a FREE service. Careful, do not count out the fact that people out there may try to scam you using this service. Enjoy.

Thanks for the info.I don't see how they can charge you for the call without your permission though. It would be like I go to the store and buy stuff and tell them to put it on your account, wouldn't it.That would or should be against the law.Have to check up on that.I see a lawsuit in this if they do that.Otherwise I should just give a blank check to my cell phone company and tell them how much is in my checking account and say help yourself.I see a scam in this! The cellphone company wins period. It should be our choice if we want the number given out or not.Otherwise it should be in the public registries. Thanks again for the info.Man am I pissed and gonna call up my cell company tomorrow and let them have it if this is true! Then it is in the hands of lawyers!

you're getting "telemarketing " calls on your cell, you must have put your cell into something, somewhere, ...and now its being "shared" with companies or whatever. Just DONT ANSWER and call cell phone company, tell them of problem, or go online to your account, and add the number to a block call list, if your provider has that.

Sorry, it is an Urban Legend. No such thing exists for cell phone #'s. There might be a website or toll free # to register. Guess what, you just fed your info to those you are trying to avoid. You must admit these marketers are clever.

It's totally false. There is a great website called "www.snopes.com
The staff at "Snopes" researches the stupid urban legends, myths and junk mail that we receive daily. They researched this bogus story and it is being reported as false. We cannot believe everything we read.
