Alcohol addiction is so severe that withdrawal... "detoxing"... can kill you. It's also incredibly addictive psychologically, and the numbers of alcoholics worldwide is staggering... in the hundreds of thousands, and those are just the ones that admit to a problem.
Other drugs just haven't made the cut in terms of acceptability. And even alcohol has had a tough time of it, as when we had the prohibition in the U.S. But people need their escapes, and despite the drawbacks of alcohol, it had long since become a part of life and an expected freedom for many people.
It's a shame it wasn't marijuana that made it instead of alcohol, as that's a much milder drug. Withdrawal from marijuana can't kill you. In fact, about the most it will ever do is leave you saying, "Aw, man, I'm out of grass. Bummer." And that's a lot milder than getting the sweats, having body spasms, and dying from withdrawal... which can and sometimes does happen from alcohol addiction.

We can not judge selling alcohol is better illegal or legal. We have to think like we are walking in the middle of sword which has very sharp eye of sword in each side.
Selling alcohol is illegal when the seller sold to people who under 18 or 21, it depends on the legal system each conuntry including the basic nationality like in Saudi Arabia.
But, it comes legal when the seller sold to people who has 18 or 21 years old.
This problem can be fixed easily by asking for his/her ID when buying. Unfortunatelly sometimes younger people ask to elder one who has been mature by the law or the elder push the younger to drink it. In the first everything is legal, but the final user is illegal.
Another side, by selling alcohol, the goverment can put very high tax. It is very profitable.
Alcohol is not same with drugs such as cocaine or others, since alcohol can not kill you but drugs can.

People have been doing the alcohol DRUG for so long that society regards it as a merely mildly "bad" thing to do. (Society seems to partly buy in to the old drunks' whine "I kiin laaaay off o' thith sthuff anneetime I wanta!")
But you smokers, according to big brother, need to be VERY heavily taxed out of that cigarette addiction, meanwhile Joe Sixpax is plowing over your kids down at the bus stop while drinking his nontaxed drug of choice, which some people are dumb enough to think of merely as just another beverage.

I believe that it has to do with the makers of alcohol, & cigarettes Take marijuanna for example, years ago the suppliers of alcohol & cigarettes felt threatened by cheap, & easy to obtain mary jane, so they lobbied to have it declared illegal, & filled the minds of the general public with lies about how unsafe it was, so we would continue to buy their equally unsafe & addictive products.

so which you do no longer drink in any respect? it fairly is reliable. i for my section do no longer drink the two. besides the fact that, i don't have a situation with human beings ingesting -- moderately. yet to blame the producer is like saying weapons kill human beings. So i will blame my typos on my keyboard, suitable?

Because the rich want their double vodka martini's. When it comes to taking things from high society it somehow is met by heavy opposition.
