Because first of all lets look at the competition they face on a daily basis. Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Indiia, Iran, Saudi. And European teams play against each other England, France, Sweden, Italy, Holland, even the ones you dont hear about that often are fantastic like Turkey, Russia, Norway. Also the leagues in Europe are far more advanced and offer the best competition. Also Europe and South America has a better infrastructure for the game that is at least a century old.

Countries like Brazil, Germany, Italy, England, and most of the Euro countries takes Football serious and even the players and the clubs that they play in, if you see and compare u will find in the Asian teams there are one, two or three tops talented players like karimi and others, but see the team as a whole u will fins that they play in a way in the first half then they go down the drain in the second one, the real good teams depend on the players talent, training & practice, tactics, readings of the coach of the match, and finally the mentality of the country about football, for example what happened with Australia this year with the magnificent coach he changed them completely and what he did with Korea in 2002 they were 4th in the rank. Asian teams know how to qualify but they need know hoe to play the world cup, because the world cup has its own calculations and tactics, you play in a way in the first round, in the second u play differently and so one until the final which has the totally different measures! They need more time and training and taking football more serious.

As you stated, they play well as individuals, but that does not count during a 90 + minutes football game. It is important to play as a team rather than trying to win as an individual. Having said that they did not play well as a team during the world cup.
Take either Korea or also Japan as an example. Half the time they were not playing because they were trying to make it look like a foul as they were not able to get the ball themselves. Their defense was in a very weak condition even before the actual world cup (at least in case of Korea). Another factor is their size. They are rather small in height as well as weight. So seen in the game against Switzerland who are really tall all the headings are rather difficult to win.
I think that there are many more reasons as to why they did not well but this does not mean that they don't play well in general. Obviously they are able to win as they all qualified for the World Cup regardless of who they played against.
Hopefully they can improve within the next 4 years.

They are going up against countries that eat, sleep, and drink soccer/football. Its much like America's situation, when there is a variety of other sports (not saying there arent other major sports in Europe, just that there are some major baseball leagues in Japan and Korea, if I recall correctly), their best athletes aren't all dedicated to one sport.

they are good in asia but not in the world. because asia is simply not a football country. asian people work and sleep, work n sleep. they never have time for sports. they aren't dedicated to sports.
