Originally thongs were those things that you wear on your feet. The g-string is a string bikini. Somewhere in time somebody changed the meaning of thongs.

Thongs are wider and have more material. A g string only has a string on the back part.

The first guy couldn't be more wrong. A thong has a thicker string where as the g string (or v string if you are at victorias secret) is more thin.
