The color is produced by bile that comes from the gal bladder.
Other waste material adds to the color. If someone is sick with the flu or something like that, their diarrhea will be a light lime green. the shorter it stays in the body the more bile like color it is.
The longer the bile is in the body the darker it becomes.
If a person is very constapated the fecal matter aka poop will be very dark and dry. A healthy poop is a medium brown and comes out in a bit of a long S shape.

Because of the breakdown of the foods we eat and the bacterias that do the job. Thats why when were feeling poorly or not our normal self, or our intestines are "moving" its best to eat yogurt to put back the healthy bacterial cultures that have been destroyed or um, moved out. Its also a reason the colors change to an unhealthy green or runny (of course other considerations often come into play here also, such as fiber). But you'll know what I'm speaking of when you see it and you'll know it when you feel it : ))
One of the new "inventions" they keep speaking of for the future will be a toilet that diagnoses illnesses through, well, fecal matter. Go to the toilet and get a print-out to start your day, won't that be nice. ::sigh:: guess it'll save on toilet paper.

The color is due to stercobilin which is a by product of degradation of bilirubin by the intestinal bacterial flora. Being a derivative of bilirubin it varies its color from yellow to deep brown depending on the amount released in the large intestine as well as the quantity of moisture in your feces (or poop).

"Human fecal matter varies significantly in appearance, depending on diet and health. Normally it is semisolid, with a mucus coating. Its brown colouration comes from a combination of bile and dead red blood cells."

Interestingly, I was in China a month ago and went to a Panda sanctuary. Their fecal matter is a sort of lime green..because of their mostly bamboo diet. So, logically, it is a function - somewhat- of our diet.

OK...here's an anatomy and physiology lesson...
As your body digests food, acids and enzymes are secreted to help break down the food into usable nutrients. One of those is bile, secreted from your gallbladder.
Bile is what turns your poo...poo color. =)

IT IS WHAT YOU EAT. IT IS ONCE SAID LOOK AT YOUR STOOLS AFTER YOU HAVE TO THE BATHROOM. YOU CHECK THE COLOR, CONSISTENCY, THE AMOUNT OF STOOL. IF SOMEONE DRINKS PEPTO BISMOL IN A FEW HOURS OR THE NEXT STOOL PASSING IT WOULD BE BLACK AND IT STARTLES ALOT OF PEOPLE.
