If it's an idea, you can copyright it for $35. You can download the application from the Library of Congress. Once registered, you have legal rights to the documented idea. If's your idea is an actual product or product enhancment, then you'll instead want to file a patent, and if that's the route you go, I'd advise finding a good patent lawyer in your area.
Once you've established your rights to your idea, or product enhancement, you could pitch the idea in many ways. You can mail in a brochure or bound document identifying your idea/product, set up interviews, do an electronic presentation via the web, etc.
Whatever you do, don't pitch the idea until after you've ensured that your rights are protected.

Second, draft a proposal with some market research
Third, draft a nondisclosure agreement (can be found on findlaw.com)
Fourth, talk to the head of their mktg or R&D division.
Patent the idea - if they use it you can sue..
