you probably would be best calling animal control, but if you want to do it yourself, get some high top rubber boots or something and long pants on, so if you get bite you have a less chance of it penetrating your clothes, then get a long stick or sharp garden tool and search the area where you saw the snake. Do NOT reach down and try to grab the snake with your hands. After you find the snake try and move him with the stick/tool, out of the house, or you can kill it. If you don't fell up to risking it, just call the pest people.

Many people mistake other snakes for copperheads. It may or may not have been one.
However if he was there one minute than gone the next, he is probably still there hiding somewhere.
If you have a local zoo they may have a contact number for people who catch nuisance snakes. The police dept. might also know someone. Or you could your nearest reptile club/society. They usually have a member that volunteers to help in these situations.
Good luck.

I f you are sure its a copper head, you need to call the police and get everyone outof the house NOW. Copperheads carry neuro toxic venom, that means it can kill you REAL FAST. Get on a cordless phone and call 911 and get every one out of the house now!

Mothballs, believe it or not, are an excellent and cheap snake deterrent, inside or out. I use that method myself as I also live in copperhead, water moccasin country. Lots of copperheads here. Mothballs mess up their smell (taste) and it keeps them away.

A: "very carefully."
Ok, I couldn't resist.
Call the cops first. If they are not involved in this sort of SWAT operation, then contact your local wildlife authority and they will come over to do it for you. I wouldn't be able to stay in the place as is: LEAVE immediately, and take all your pets with you. I wish you all the very best for a speedy "discovery."

Call the zoo and ask for the reptile dept. They'll probably refer an exterminating service.
