Hello there! I was hoping one of you might be able to help me with the preppy look. I am not very good with fashion, so help is greatly needed. When I say preppy, I am not talking about Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, AE, etc. I am thinking more along the lines of J. Crew, RL, etc. If someone could help me with what type of pants to buy (i.e. Jeans, chinos, chords, etc.) And where do you buy your clothes (assuming your preppy), like do you buy it from and do you wear cardigans wrapped around your neck with a polo still? Also one more questions do teenagers wear J. Crew and other clothing like that?

i don't have much experience, but when i think preppy i think this...

wear a colored polo shirt, with a contrasting undershirt, and flip your collar up...

you can wear jeans or khakis with the shirts or whatever, just make sure it is a clean cut line...

also wear some sophisticated shoes...leather, suede...classy, not something that looks cheap

There's old-school prep (Ivy league) and the newer incarnations, post-Ralph Lauren.

Old school: Look at J. Press, Andover Shop, and some of the nicer items from Brooks Brothers. (They all have websites.) I've always thought J. Press has the best value-for-the-dollar (of the three), their stuff never changes, and they have killer sales a few times a year.

New school: Sometimes Ralph Lauren (though I've always thought of it more as a caricature of prep).

I don't know whether you're a man or a woman, but I think the general idea (if you want to be classic) is to not go overboard and become the aforementioned caricature. Tone it down. Be understated. This is why true preps might wear rumpled khakis. Then punch up an outfit with one splash of color or something flashy, whether that be a ribbon belt or nice brown shined leather shoes. Also, perhaps the cardinal rule: Nothing should scream "new."

The stereotype? Shetland sweater, flat-fronted chinos, boat shoes/penny loafers/wingtips, button-down oxford cloth shirts, quality hand-me-downs -- especially sports jackets. Everything is in natural fabric, no synthetics.

Ok, the word are looking for is uppity, not preppy. Teens on't wear J.Crew unless they sell them at the other store you metioned. No one i know goes to a J.Crew store for that, and likewise for RL. And, from the veiw of a 14 year old, and her friends with her, the cardigan/polo thing is so....sorry, but ghetto.
If you are really a teen, (no way you are), people will LAUGH AT YOU if you tie a jacket around you neck without mocking someone. If you want to be fashionable, the magizine ELLEgirl has a great fashion article every issue called 'Realway the Runway' where people model clothes from Khols, and target, and looking very similar to a picture of some design on the runway. btw, what the heck are 'chinos, chords'????

If you're a girl, Old School Prep can include Lilly Pulitzer dresses. Model your style after people like Jackie O and Grace Kelly. Twin sets, pearls, skirts that are knee length. Kitten heels. Anything that is lady-like.

If you are a guy: Jackets, button-downs, etc...

When I was a teen (1990s), J.Crew was in. I guess teens today aren't really interested in looking neat and tidy and proper. It's sad, really, and I guess that's why there are so many new etiquette programs popping up at colleges. Kids aren't learning at home!

The preppy look is easy. Wear shirts with collars, peacoats, khakis, denim skirts. if you look like you are going to play golf or tennis that is" preppy sport", wear matching flip flops, and lightli accesorize. There are preps of all ages. That does not exclude teenagers!
