Teachers may know what they teach, and they may cover all of the state standards with their lessons. However, in order to verify this to the administration, school board, parents, and state representatives we must put it all in writing. By doing this we are actually protecting ourselves against someone who may claim that we are not teaching the standards. Also, the idea is that any new teacher right out of college could come into a classroom and use the curriculum to teach that class.

In Texas, we have the TEKS; specific topics and connections within the topic. A topic can be taught a hundred different ways...the curriculum. Best lessons and practices change frequently. In addition, different campuses, districts etc. need to meet the needs of a variety of students. If I just gave the information from the state standards, I could finish in 6 weeks. It is the depth and presentation of those standards that is curriculum/teaching.

Since not all children in a classroom have the same learning styles, a teacher must adapt the standardized curriculum to meet their needs. We don't really write curriculum - we write lesson plans FROM the curriculum.

I can't tell you the why, but from my own experience, I love it. I have had the experience of both creating my own curriculum (that which works best for my students at that time, which intrigues both my students and me, which allows greater differentiation for the students in my class who need it, and which follows a time frame which I know will best benefit the learnign and enjoyment of my students) and one which was created by an other. Always, it is that "other" that makes me feel less like a creative, dedicated, and professional educator, and more like an automan who knows how to follow directions.
