There are two ways to check for ovulation - predictor kits or basal body temperature.

A basal body temperature (BBT) chart can tell you when you have already ovulated. Your basal body temperature and cervical mucus reflect your progesterone level, which is close to zero before you ovulate and rises dramatically after ovulation. When your progesterone level rises, so does your temperature, giving you a sign that you have ovulated.

A BBT chart tells you something about when you ovulated in a particular month, but it can't tell you exactly when to have sex that month. You have to chart your BBT for a few months and spot a pattern in your cycle before you can use it to predict when you're most fertile.

An ovulation predictor kit is like a pregnancy test (pee on a stick) and it will turn color the day before you ovulate, indicating a surge in hormones. This surge is what causes your ovary to release an egg. An ovulation kit increases your chances of conceiving by enabling you to time sex to within a day of the surge.

An ovulation predictor kit can give you advanced warning of ovulation the first month you use it. The main drawback to the kits is that they can be expensive. You can get one time kits with 7 days of tests ($10-$20) which you start based on the schedule in the package. Or you can purchase a ovulation monitor (around $250) which you can use again and again, but you will need to purchase supplies for the monitor.

Please note that both ovulation predictor kits and basal body temperature/cervical mucus charts may not work with some people.

i just went through a trial of 5 (total) years of trying to get pregnant. i too had "off" periods for this past year. i also had one miscarriage. i do however have a 5 yr old son, who we had no trouble getting pregnant for. and now.. after much trying and research i am pregnant with twins!
i found the best way to figure out my time of ovulation was to go one month without trying and keep perfect track of the dates everything happened. for example, the day your period starts would be day 1, and continue to count until your period arrives again. most of the time before and after ovulation you will have heavier discharge than normal. mark these dates down. now you have a general idea of when things are happening for you. normally time of ovulation is about 3 to 5 days and often takes place between days 14 and 17 but this is different for every person out there.
once you have a general idea of when you are ovulating, try to have intercourse a day or two before you think you are starting to ovulate. for example if your first ovulation date is day 15 then start to have intercourse on day 14 or 13 and continue until day 20 or so. this way you are more likely to have sex while ovulating.
there is of course always the small chance that you are not ovulating at all. keep this in mind but dont worry too much about it, stress will not help your chances to conceive. try whatever method you choose, after trying for about 6 months, it wouldnt hurt to see an ob and see if everything is ok.
best of wishes for you, and keep me informed, i would like to know how things turn out for you. i hope i was some help.

Go to http://www.mymonthlycycles.com and put in your period info in and it will calculate when you will be fertile and ovulating.

What is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of an egg from ovaries.

The highest possibility for a woman to become pregnant are the few days before and after ovulation.

The female body makes a substance called Luteinizing Hormone (LH) that triggers the release of the egg. During most of your menstrual cycle, your body manufactures small amounts of LH. But around the middle of your cycle, your body suddenly increases the amount of the LH for a few days. This sudden increase is called the "LH surge", and it usually causes the female body to ovulate.

Ovulation usually take place within 40 hours after the LH surge begins. You may not have an LH surge or might not ovulate every menstrual cycle. Even if your menstrual bleeding begins on time, that does not necessarily mean that your body has ovulated.

After ovulation, the amount of LH in your body will return to normal level within 2 days. Unless pregnancy occurs, the cycle of increase and decrease of LH will repeat again after your menstrual period ends.

Ovulation is when the female's egg comes down from the fallopian tubes and settles in the uterus. I didn't have regular periods either and I got pregnant after trying for only a few months. Sometimes it takes much longer to get pregnant. I tried to almost 2 years to get pregnant with my first child.

Please have a physical, talk with your doctor about regulating your periods, ask your doctor EVERY question you have. It is important to understand how your body works, irregular periods are irregular for a reason and since every woman's body is different it is important to know exactly what is going on with YOUR body.

And please. . . no offense. . .because you asked an honest question. . .and I am sure you are very nice person. . .stop trying to conceive until you know exactly what it is, how it happens, and what to expect when you're pregnant. Being pregnant can be scarry, get all of the facts first, so that your pregnancy is a happy, calm, and sacred time for you and your partner.

ovulation is when your egg is dropped. You can buy ovulation monitors from the drug store, they are usually sold in the same area as pregnancy test. Try having sex every day of the month, that's a guaranteed way of making sure you have intercourse while your ovulating

I always thought it was like 1-2 weeks after your period. Just bang like crazy and you will be good.
