If you mean, why can't Americans see others as they are, and not as we think they are, I believe there are many reasons. But one or two stand out for me. First, a lot has to do with our upbringing. If we tend to brand "other groups" by racial or gender characteristics, we probably heard that growing up. But we can unlearn these things through education, observation, honesty, and openness to new ideas.
Second, a lot has to do with our willingness to evaluate what we see everyday in our lives; where we are in school or work, etc. If our eyes are really open, we will find that other people are individuals, not part of a "group." Too often the media pidgeon holes people by racial, gender, and religious preferences. But if our eyes are open, we will find that people are what they seem to be, not what "pidgeon hole" they belong to.
All it takes is a little honesty to look at what the INDIVIDUAL really is.

Because if we see people for who they are we will probably not like them anymore, and if we were not friends with anyone then we would be awful lonely! Sometimes when we see people we see only their faults but you know it might not be a fault to them.
The Media has pushed on the whole society of what is right, what is Beautiful, what is ugly, what is to fat, rich people are better than the poor. What I want to know is who told them that anyways!

Because most people live in a constant state of fear and are always seeking a false sense of security. Most people are afraid of the unknown. Therefore, if someone is left to be who they are, we don't know what they will do. But if we force them to be who we want them to be, then we have created a false sense of security because we believe we now know what they will do next. Thus, putting a ridiculous band-aid on the fear of the unknown.

Because if these people are really special to us we see them with our hearts and not with our heads. We also have a tendency to want to "save" the people we care about by changing them. That doesn't work. Someone usually gets hurt, and it's usually the one trying to do the changing.

Are you not guilty of this same thing asking this question? These people you speak of...that is who they are...that is the way they have decided to live.....All you can do and control is you and your decisions on how to live your life....also remember that most people are a product of their society...their surroundings...their upbringing and do not think for themselves..they rely on other people, situations and structures to guide their lives.....it is those that do not allow their decision to be totally based on these things and actually use their minds that live life to the fullest and allow those around them to be who they want to be. I hope this helps.. much peace and happiness to you

Ahhh, but it is because we see people for who they are that we want them to change and become who we want them to be.
I agree, however, that the variety and diversity of the United States makes our country interesting.

There are a lot of fake people out there, everywhere. But the best is to be what you are! Life is not about what other people think but what you think about your surrounding.

I think your answer might be society expectations on everyone of us is very high and we tend to pretend we reach that level by simulating that life style.

I wish I could see people for what I want them to be and not for what they are!

Good question!
You have to learn to accept people for who they are. Don't try and change someone, it never works.

Because we haven't yet learned that we are not in control, God is, and if we expect someone to be what we want them to be then we are second guessing God's handiwork.
