The government makes a nice chunk of change on tax stamps. The whole tobacco thing is so ridiculous. Common sense tells you that inhaling smoke is probably going to hurt you long term.
So the government goes after big tobacco even though it makes all this tax revenue from the sale of tobacco and in many states subsidizes the tobacco growers. My tobacco growing friends in Tennessee even used to get nice little care packages from Nabisco thanking them for growing the stuff.
But even better, the government sues the tobacco companies even though it hooked a generation of American sevicemen on the cigarettes from WWII to Vietnam. I believe they were standard issue....and why were they standard issue, because even then the government understood the effects of tobacco.
We truly live in a bizarre world.
Oh and all that tobacco settlement money didn't go to help cancer victims, etc., it went to this project or that as each state decided what to do with their new found windfall.

you got it wrong. The government demands cars to be safer so they can fine the ones who aren't and hence make money. Reason why they don't take tobacco is...... money. The government makes too much money off cigarettes. Just like liquor which kills also, the government will never banned it.

Get real. The government could care less about your health, that's why you get to eat at McDonalds 9 times a week. There's way too much money to be made on tobacco companys, or it would have been illegal years ago.

Just like alcohol and its prohibition. FDA may have the same fear. And unlike tobacco, alcohol has not been sued to the extent as cigarettes - as alcohol and the manufacturing thereof have similar harmful affects. The primary reason = strong lobbying with special interests in the midst compiled with voter base that still smokes.

Big Tobacco is powerful and has a lot of money, but the reason smoking isn't banned and shouldn't be is that it is everyone's choice to do what they like.
Should we forbid people form eating fast food, from playing sports, and other things that may hurt them? Of course not; some people are willing to take the risk, and you should let them. It's only fair.

it's a free market. Rat poison kills too, but they still sell it. Fried food kills. Sleeping pills kill. Firecrackers kill. We can't just take away anything that can hurt us and encase the country in a giant rubber room. It's every person's responsibility to look after their own health. I'm not sure why drugs are illegal, to be honest. I'm big on letting people make their own choices and facing their own consequences.

Okay....smoking is stupid and gross.
You can't make it illegal. You can make it so that smokers have to sit in a dark room with the lights out under there sheets....but you can't make it illegal.
By that logic we could make water illegal. Drink enough water and you'll die.
Making them illegal would make criminals out of millions of americans....and pick up a history book and see how that worked out...specifically look at the 18th amendment and then turn the page and read about the 21st amendment. A good example of what happens when the religious right is in control.
