When I chose my research project I sought the advice of my adviser and then looked at the real world and what I had the ability to actually research. I chose a topic close to my profession which I could use later.

1) What really interests you?
2) What do you have the ability to thoroughly research?
3) What resources are at your disposal?
4) What could you really accomplish in the allotted time period?

The field of stem cells is wide open now. Check out the research that has already been published. Does any of it sound interesting? Try to take it a step farther. Maybe you could take the current research and apply it in a different manner.

If this is for a course project, you'll probably need to focus on something related to the course. If it's more broad you have basically everything to choose from. If you want to do stem-cells, thats you're choice. It wouldn't be mine because I'm more of a physics person so I'd tell you something related to nanotech development or biophysics and engineering.

The thing to do is be creative. Look for a need or a problem that can be looked into and research on ways that it might be solved. This works for professionals (guessing by the forum you asked this in you are a student not a professional) and can also aid in choosing a major-a wise person once told me to "think about what I think about when I think about nothing" as a guide for career chosing. In short be creative, look for a problem more than an area of research. Start broad and get specific, it works for reporting, it works for research, and it'll get you started.

The field is wide open. One of the things that came to my mind was the first Woman Doctor. The actual protype to that TV show. I reasearched her once long ago. She was VASTLY different than the character on TV. She had to go from college to college, doctor to doctor, because no one would teach her for more than a year and she finally settled down in one of the Plain states, like Montana or Kansas or Oklahmoma. She even studied with a dentist for a while I don't recall her name. There is also the foundation, settlement and unionhoold of Utah and the Mormons. Going back to the woman topic there is French nation who founded an American company in NY and Fort Lee, Alice Guy-Blache and her Solax film company in 1910 That also inspired Lois Weber, who was a singer and Religious advocate who made independent films. There is also the whole Westinghouse, Eastmas, Edison and Tesla thing, mostly in NY state and NJ. Any of them. The Edison empire, mistakes included (he sold, I believe, bad patents to Tesla, including his tube which turned out to be the Diode, but Edison didn't know what he had because he didn't know Ohms law). This whole thing centers around entertainment (Edison invented the Phono, Motion Picture, Sound Motion Pictures), electricity and lighting, power generating. That Patents Trust Company, totally facinating. It was a facinating cut-throat venture! Edison and his DC current VS Westinghouse and is AC current. Jefferson's a good project. So is Franklin. Depends on how specific you have to be. That whole era is facinating.

Research into what? There are hundreds of possible fields and your request is impossibly vague. I hope you are more precise than this if you plan to ask the research company for any information, or if you propose a project!

The best way is to find a problem you want to solve. Like find out how stem cells can be turned into the Islets of Langerhans so they can be re-introduced into diabetics.
