The National League was founded in 1876 and also includes the oldest franchise, the Cincinnati Reds (1869). The American League was founded as a minor league in 1900 and became a major league in 1901.

Other major leagues were the American Association (1880s), Players' League (1890) and Federal League (1914-15). The last two were established by players who were disgusted with the heavy-handed treatment they received at the hands of owners.

There have been no major leagues since, though the Continental League was ready to go in 1961 and was headed off only by the other leagues agreeing to the first round of expansion, which included three of the originally proposed franchises. This last came about because fans in New York were disgusted with the simultaneous departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants in 1957; a New York lawyer, William A. Shea, started to organize the Continental League in 1958. (Shea Stadium is named for him.)

National League is older by a lot. Hence why the National League is often called the "senior circuit" and the American League the "junior circuit".

National League was created in February of 1876. The American League didnt come into existence until 25 years later!
