With my first baby I never used Dreft, however I got hooked on it with my second child...I use it when I can..but I use another kind that I found no one in my family is allergic to. Pyrex and it doesn't cost as much as the rest.
Dreft keeps everything smelling nice and keeps the baby blankets soft..but so do other detergents.
I would say change detergents when you get tired of spending ten dollars or so for a small bottle of detergent that doesn't last that long, when you can get a better deal and have something that does the same job.

My daughter has sensitive skin so I used dreft until she was about 18 months or so...maybe a little longer because I didn't want to waste what was left by just throwing it out. Now I use the arm & hammer dye and fragrance free detergent. I tried using what I normally used (tide) but it was too harsh for her skin.
I would say to just try something else with one load of your child's wash before you use the last of the dreft you have. If there is a problem go back to dreft. If there isn't a problem, no harm done and at least you know what to expect when you're all out of dreft. :0)

I started using Dreft and then tried at three months switching to a new detergant. My daughter broke out in a rasha dn I did the rinse cycle twice and only put in about 1/4 of a cup for her clothes. It really depends on the baby but supposedly it is better to use the baby detergnt for one year so that it gives time for their little skin to biuld up defenses. However, like everyone else on here I feel that if your baby has no reaction you dont really need the way more expensive dreft. My case was just special. Good luck!

i never used "special" detergent for my baby's clothes. i think dreft is just a way for new mom's to spend money. i personally think it's a waste of money. and dreft should only be used if it seems like your child's skin is too sensitive for the normal detergent.

I only used Dreft for about 2 months. I realized that everthing else was washed in Tide (my clothes, my sheets, etc) and they did not react to me holding them all the time against these things, so I stopped.

My son is six months old and I still use it. It is just my choice to use it. I don't use dreft because it is so expensive. I use ALL for baby, You can get three times the amount for the price of dreft. I guess that is why I still use it because it is inexpensive. But really you dont need baby soap it is just my personal choice.

I never washed his clothing in baby detergent and he has been just fine. I use Arm&Hammer though, because I am allergic to Tide.

3 months with my first, I didn't even bother using baby detergent with my second. You don't really need it. If you're worried about your baby breaking out, run the clothes through the rinse cycle twice.
