No, he's not homophobic, more like gay-o-phobic. This is only natural though because he's ignorant toward what gay men are really like (i.e. he's probably never had a close and "cool" gay friend). People tend to be afraid of things that they're don't know anything about, especially if they've built up prejudice towards them ahead of time.
His basic "uncomfortableness towards gay men" derives from the root of his sexuality, which is heterosexual. So he likes the opposite sex, and would naturally enjoy and have NO problem watching two women making out or dating, because he's attracted to that sex and likes everything about women and their bodies, etc.
I would actually classify him as "prejudice towards gay men" instead of homophobic. It's ashame, but hopefully you can shed some light for him and let him know that gay men aren't anything to be afraid of...they're not "out to get him" or whatever. Gay guys really get a bad rap here in the states, they're stereotyped as all being extremely flamboyant and speaking with a lisp and trying to seduce straight guys. When that's actually just not true.
Hope this helps.

Well, there are a lot of homophobic people who like lesbians. They think they are hot, so that makes it acceptable for some reason. He is still homophobic if he doesn't like gay men.

Well of course. Most men that are homophobic are only that way about 2 guys. They LOVE the idea of watching or participating with 2 girls having sex.
My husband is exactly that way.
I think that is what we call a Double Standard !

I think he's only afraid he'll get cornered by a person the same sex as him. He knows a gay woman poses no risk to him. So yes, he can be homophobic of just gay men.

The problem with straight men and there fear of homosexual men is that instead of thinking of them as a man who loves a man.. They automatically think about what goes on in the privacy of there own bedroom and that groses them out!

Just because someone doesn't endorse homosexuality, that doesn't mean they are 'afraid' of homosexuals or homosexuality. It also doesn't mean they 'hate' them or are 'prejudiced against' them.
It doesn't make people bigots for them to have their own morals.

typical straight male double standard. straight males are "ok" with lesbians as they don't pose any "threat" to them. if he's prejudiced towards gay men, he's still homophobic.

Yep. He's definately against gay men.
And if he really understood gay women he would not be so gung ho about them.
knock - knock buddy!
I HAVE NEWS FOR YOUR FRIEND!!! LESBIANS DON'T WANT HIM JOINING IN! THEY ARE GAY - THAT MEANS THEY DON'T LIKE MEN!!!
But it sounds like he only hears what he wants to hear anyway if he is the type of person that believes in double standards. If he actually comprehends this message he might need a bottle of jd to reevaluate his life.

He is probably afraid of "becoming" or thought of as a "homo"...he's afraid of what others think...and maybe a little bit of his own feelings he hasn't entirely dealt with either...he's not threatened by lesbians...
