My guess is that you're in the USA and a teen-age female, I'm in the UK and I'm a 74 years young male. If your 'Old days' scenario includes the years from 1943 onwards then I am happy to confirm to you that a 'Sanitary towel' with strings at the front and back, were in general use, as were condoms, known here as 'French letters'

they used lams wool, and then used the rags everyone else has mentioned (i think that's where we get the term "on the rag") and then they used something like the pads we use today, but it was before the adhesive, and so it had straps and buttons and this whole harness thing to hold the pad in place until you changed it

what i have heard is that they used like pieces of cloth (like cloth diapers) and then they would keep it in the underwear using safety pins (ouch, becareful when you sit!) and then they would wash them and use it again the next month. im so glad they invented tampons and pads and birth control, less periods!

I use what they did back then. They make and sell, environmental reusable pads. Cloth type and wash out like a cloth diaper.

They used rags and washed them.
When my mother was at school, you washed them in a little shed and then hung them on the back fence.
It sounds gross, and I'm sure was so, but at least it was ecologically sensible. They were recycled and didn't become instant landfill.
