acetone will undergo an aldol condensation with itself under the basic conditions. The product will be 4,4-dimethyl-3-penten-2-one

Well, we know acetone consists of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen (C2H3O2), and lye is made from sodium hydroxide (NaOH), so if you mixed the two together you'd have a rather corrosive substance. However, if you mixed acetic acid (acetone w/ an extra hydrogen) and the lye, you'd wind up with a neutralization reaction creating sodium acetone and water.

Wouldn't that remove both the fingernail and the polish? I'm afraid I haven't tried that combination yet, but I will definitely try it in August and see what happens.
