What kind of error are your getting? Also you really should upgrade to SP2, but don't install it until you know you are not infected with any spyware or virus's.

SP2 is safe to download, and soon Microsoft will be dropping support for SP1, meaning no more windows updates unless you have SP2. SP3 is already in the making

If its crashing during windows logon its probably a problem with the windows partition or MBR. Boot from a disk and rewrite the MBR. If that doesnt work, try Chkdsk. Does the screen go black, blue or just restart.

Can you get the computer up long enough to do a system restore to an earlier date? Truthfully, I'm not sure, and I don't think you can do that in safe mode. Mine whacked out tonight and I rolled it back to yesterday and now it's fine. It's worth a shot.

It may not be yoiur video driver, but you know your machine better than I do.

Do you havbe a different video card available?

Have you tried a windows repair?

SP2 would cure some security problems, but would in itself probably not fix your crashing problem.

You need to update to XP sp2.... It comes with the most recient version of DirectX. If you got the most recient version (SP2 Version, I will call it to help).. It is not compatable with SP1..

hmmm...which version of DirectX did you download??, i remember that one time i was downlaoding directx, i kept downloading 9.0a or something, and i needed 9.0c, so try out the different types of directX, it worked for me

That, and maybe switching to SP2 would help...
