he hit 30 homers, played a great hot corner, and almost single-handedly led the angels to the al west and almost got them to the world series. they would have gone if it weren't for a couple of fluke calls. if it weren't for him the angels wouldn't even have BEEN in the post-season. Come ON guys!

It was close

I'm not sure what someone means by "Fielding stats are less reliable and Yount led his team to the post season" 1st off fielding stats are every bit the measure of a players defensive play the same way batting stats are his measure as an offensive player.2nd the Angels were in the playoffs, the Brewers beat the Angels 3 games to 2 in the LCS.

Robin Yount BA-331 OB%-384 SLG-578 OPS-962
SS - GP-154 TC-766 TCG-4.97 FLD%-969
4.97 is good but not great 969 is slightly below average

Doug Decinces BA-301 OB%-369 SLG-548 OPS-917
3B - GP-153 TC-532 TCG-3.48 FLD%-961
3.48 is excellent for a 3B, 961 is slightly below average

I would think it probable came down to Yount was the more established "star" even though this was Yount's first really big year. While Decinces was know more for his glove and not a whole lot for his bat, it was his 7th season and he had hit over .270 only once in his career. Also Shortstop is considered a more important defensive position.I would say it was close but certainly he didn't get robbed.

You want a rob job?

George Grett -3B-1985 - BA-335 OB%-436 SLG-585 OPS-1021
Gold glove 3B - Royals Win AL-West AL-Pennant and World Series

Don Mattingly 1B-1985 BA-324 OB%-371 SLG-567 OPS-938
Yankees finish 2nd in AL East out of the playoffs

Mattingly wins AL MVP, figure that one out..

While he had a strong year in '82, it's difficult to argue that he was the best player in the AL that year. His 30 HR were only 10th in the league and his batting average and RBI (the other Big 3 stats categories) weren't even in the top 10. Fielding stats are less reliable, but his .961 fielding percentage was about average for the time.

Overall, Robin Yount (who won the award, and did lead his team to the post-season) had better numbers across the board: while he had one fewer HR than Decinces, his batting average was 30 points higher and he drove in 17 more runs. Decinces had an excellent season, it simply wasn't the best in the league.

Yount had a hell of a season for a first place team...hit 30 points higher and had a better OPS...can't call it a robbery...

why are you worried about a game that took place over 20 years ago?
