Okay, I have my ears gauged to a 1/2". Ear gauging is NOT permanent and if you ever decide you don't want them, you just take them out and eventually they'll close back to normal, as long as the size you have is below a 0 gauge. Any bigger than that and your chances of it going completely back to normal is slim, but that's not to say it'll be that way forever. What I can advise you against is rushing to bigger sizes, because this creates scar tissue and damages your ear tissue, and you can't fix that. Go one size at a time, and do it every other month so your ears can heal. Be patient. You should have your original piercing that you want to make bigger for a few months before you gauge it so everything is healed. Remember to buy an ear piercing solution to keep them clean. I've had my 1/2" gauges for about a year and a half now, and I do have a good job, so don't worry about it. Hope this helps :)

Edit- I don't know what one of the other answers meant by, "without parental consent". All you do is buy larger sized jewelry and put them in by yourself. I was 16 when I did it. And I'm guessing by "really succesful people", you mean Hollywood? There are plenty of people with great careers who modify their bodies.

None dude, you are going to limit your future by doing that. How many really successful people do you see with gaged ears that are not tattoo artists. BTW most states will not allow you to get them at your age w/o parent consent.
