If you define democracy as "the will of the people to elect their representatives and a government of their choice", then freedom is needed so they can truly get their choice. Cuba considers itself a democracy and has elections, but do the people have a choice not to vote for Castro? Autonomy is needed to insure that people are unbiased in their choice and truly have their own will expressed. Look at Iraq or Afghanistan. Because the US influences the government and political forces, US factors chose the candidates, not the people. In the US however, China doesn't guide us on who to nominate and all citizens over the age of 18 have the right to vote.

Well. Whenever someone challenges the "legitimacy" of our democracy or tries to curtail our freedom or take us over, we kill them. Just like has been done for the entire history of humanity.
