Your question has three parts to it, one of which, though unspoken, was inferred. If I may, I'd like to address each one individually. Those three are: 1. Do they have the might? 2. Do they have the desire? 3. Do they have the means, or rather, the ability to survive afterwards?

Might? absolutely. They have an army of 250 MILLION people, about 100 of which would probably be kept back as a home guard. That means that, at any given point in time, they have 150 million soldiers, sailors, and pilots to throw any which way they want. For comparison, the ENTIRE population of the United States is approx. 300 million, with only about 2-3 mill in the Armed Forces and another, oh, I'd say about 30-50 mill or so that would be fit for combat under a draft the rest are women, children, elderly, handicapped, criminals, or illegals.

Also, an unspoken in your question, do they have the desire to fight us? That depends on who you mean by they? The people, as a whole, don't really give a crap. Fight us, don't fight us, really doesn't affect them a whole lot. In communist countries, however, what the people think is really quite irrelevant. The government, however, hates us with a passion and strongly desires to destroy us, even if half of China has to die and the other half has to burn. As long as they aren't at risk, what is it to them?

The means, then? Ah, there it is. Right now, they are leeching off our stong, vibrant, consumer-driven economy, like all communist countries do. Because of their repressionism at home, they will probably always need a strong foreign consumer base to draw on. But whether they need us is irrelevant. What matters is: does the Communist government THINK they need us? Right now, that is an affirmative. However, the moment they no longer think so, we had all better reach for our guns, because if we don't, our children will all be learning Mandarin in school. Period.

I am an American living and working in China. China is not interested in war mainly because their concerns are in developing their nation, bettering the lives of her people, improving education and health care. From time to time, reporters get a little too liberal with their spin on statements made by leaders and offer headlines that seem to show China as being prepared for war..."China will use nuclear weapons over Taiwan". Obviously a country must be prepared to defend its rights and if attacked, would respond as needed. Taiwan and China are at odds over whether Taiwan is part of the mainland or an independent country but that should be a domestic issue and not open to US interference. However if the US takes part in the matter, China would consider itself bound to do something. Taiwan was established when Chiang Kai Shek and the KouMingTan were forced out of mailand China by Mao Tse Tung. Chiang was notorious for corruption and linked to the very wealthy Soong Family by marriage (Madame Chiang)...her brother T.V. Soong was the wealthiest man in the world at the time. Chiang and his wife were supported by many wealthy American businessmen including Henry Luce and they also managed to get several billion dollars worth of aid from the US. In short, we were supporting a bunch of crooks and turned our backs on Chairman Mao, as we did with Ho Chi Minh and supported the French in trying to re-colonizing Vietnam. So US interference in Taiwan should be avoided and let the people solve their own problems. Relations between Taiwan and the mainland are improving and once the stubborn old element has passed on, relations will be amicable. Several areas of China are autonomous now and likely Taiwan would be the same. Hong Kong, Macau and certain parts of the mainland are included in something called SAR (Special Administrative Region) as when the colonies reverted to the mainland, there were many changes but the changes were gentle and though we read of Hong Kong people striving for freedom, it is a minority and the people enjoy the same freedoms as they did under the British. However you are a little mistaken about the power of China. It has the technology and a vast army. With the population at 1.3 billion people, lets assume that half are males and half of those are of military age (actually it is more as 115 males are born to each 100 girls), it puts the fighting force at about the population of the US....the whole population and if we halve that to 150 million and then take only those of military age...our army is pretty small compared to what China could field. But you need not worry. The Chinese have a great deal of affection towards America and relations between the US and China would improve rapidly but we have silly politicians that posture only to make themselves look good. I live in Southwest China and it is a rare day when someone doesn't say "Welcome to China!" They are hard-working people who want the same things as you do...more money...better education for their child...a more comfortable home and now many are striving to buy a car. More people in China speak English than the entire population of the US...do they want to open the door?

One out of 4 people in the world is Chinese. We are not the great super power as in the past. We don't have the manpower or the money to support a war with China. Sheer numbers game. Have a great day.

I think China is the next super power, and I dont want to find out if the US can go "toe to toe" with china.

China is without question a threat, especially if we maintain a moron as our president

No. But the government there is freaking *** crazy and thinks it does. Further, they see themselves as the legitimate rulers of the world and think the United States is evil for standing in the way of a chinese empire where everyone else is their slaves.

The people think VERY differently though. Quite frankly, they want democracy. One thing you never hear about in our country is all the protests demanding democracy in china.

Only a matter of time.
