Heat shrinks.
Wash in hot water. Unless you have a hot wash/ hot rinse temperature setting, when the hot wash cycle is coming to an end, you'll need to switch to a setting with a hot rinse. You're also going to dry them on hot -- make sure they're bone dry when you remove them from the dryer, the goal is to "overdry" them a little.
If they're big through the waist, butt & hips but the right length, dampen just the legs with a spray bottle of cold water several times during the dry cycles to keep them damp so they won't shrink, too... and when you remove from the dryer, hang by the bottom of the pant legs so the weight of the jeans stretches the leg length slightly to undo any length shrinkage caused from the hot water and heat drying.

If your new jeans are a size too big, or if your old jeans have gotten looser with wear, you can shrink the material using hot water. There are multiple methods you can use, but heat is a factor in each one. Here are a few different things you can try the next time you need to shrink your jeans down to size

I have boiled them in water for an hour or two. Then hot dryer for an hour or two. Same size 501 s that fit me perfectly. Still way too big. I am kind of wondering about throwing a bunch of salt into the boiling water or some other chemical. Bottom line for me is that I will never buy Levi s online again. I think I saved $7 out of $50 for a pair of jeans that might get one wearing before looking like gangster material and need washing.

RE:
How do you shrink jeans?
I bought a pair of jeans from Banana Republic that are size 6 and I am a 6 but these are huge! But they are so cute and I like them alot. [I can't return them] So do you wash them in cold water and high heat dryer, or hot and hot????

Jeans have progressive shrinkage which means they shrink up a little more each & everytime you wash them, especially after 5 washings. I bought a pair of junior size 11 jeans cause they were cute, they were big but after a few [3-plus] years of laundering they fit. I wear a ladies size 4. Because they were a trendy-but classic style, [being classic boot cut[ that were fringed at the bottom, they are still in style & work great with flat sandals. You would want to wash them normally, & dry them as you would your other fine jeans. I hope this helps.

cold water is what you are SUPPOSED to wash them in, with a low heat dryer (as to keep them from shrinking), but seeing as you want them to shrink, Wah them in the hottest water your washer has (no soap, that will speed up fading), try and take them out soon after they are done...Dry them on the second hottest setting, make sure you have a fabric softner in there with it, because they will be stiff! When they are done, hang them up to cool (you don't want them wrinkly), and try 'em on. they should have shrunk. For this to work best, try and have a high cotton jean...hope it works, my sis loves Banana Rep.!

Don't wash them in hot water. This won't shrink them but it will fade them. Drying them on high heat will help but they will probably relax after each wearing.

You probably won't be able to shrink them because most clothes are pre-shrunk when you buy them. But if they are not pre-shrunk then you can wash them on super high heat and dry them on super high heat, but they might not shrink enough, it depends on how big they are.
